Now Viewing: luigiTag type: Character Mario's taller and thinner younger brother. He wears a green hat and shirt, and blue overalls. He also has a mustache and wears gloves like his brother. He was originally a palette swap of Mario, but over time, his appearance and personality was made distinct from Mario's. He is usually portrayed as being less brave and stuck in his older brother's shadow. Nevertheless, he is popular enough to get his own game in Luigi's Mansion, and is a series mainstay ever since he was introduced in the 1983 Mario Bros. arcade game. Nintendo has also decided to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Luigi's debut in Mario Bros. by designating 2013 as the Year of Luigi and releases games and products prominently featuring the younger Mario brother like Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, a DLC Expansion pack for New Super Mario Bros. U where Luigi goes through 80 levels by himself and a sequel to Mario and Luigi called Mario and Luigi Dream Team. The gradual diversion from Mario is also apparent in his Super Smash Bros. appearances. Although he has visually similar moves to his brother, their are key differences in the way they work and in each subsequent appearance his fighting style is further differentiated from his brother. He also has a taunt that can damage his opponent. Although it does little damage, if an opponent is clinging to a ledge and Luigi does his taunt right on his/her/its fingers, the opponent will be knocked off. His voice acting too has shifted over the years. In the earlier games featuring voice acting, Luigi's voice varied depending on the game and in some games he sounded much higher pitched, but his voice has become more consistent during the 2000s and sounds comparatively lower. Luigi is depicted as being able to jump even higher than Mario, but he is also depicted as being less coordinated as his controls are more slippery than his brother's. There was a period of time throughout the 1990s where Luigi for some reason made relatively few appearances and was conspicuously absent from the first two 3D Mario platformers, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Perhaps recognizing his popularity, Nintendo has made it a point to include Luigi in subsequent Mario platformers and he has been made playable again in new Mario platformers from New Super Mario Bros. onwards. The DS remake of Super Mario 64, Super Mario 64 DS, added Luigi as a playable character. He was also absent in Super Mario RPG, but he did appear in the instruction manual. Subsequent Mario RPGs have included him, often as a comedic character. Mario Kart 64 is also the first time he has been voice acted in a video game. He is voiced by Charles Martinet (majority of the games), Julien Bardakoff (Mario Party 1 and 2, JPN version of Mario Kart 64), Mizushima Yu (1986 anime and Satellaview), and Tatsuta Naoki (OVA trilogy) John Leguizamo played him in the live action film.
