Why not? Quite honestly everything else with pokemon has gone way paste the point of being stale and redundant so why not spice things up a bit? It's obvious that they have WANTED to imply a bit of romance before (with Misty and KIND OF with Dawn) but didn't know how to properly apply it without making it mess with the formula the show has been using all these years (going to gyms, getting into all kinds of shenanigans along the way, beating team rocket, stopping some evil guys from ruling the world, ash losing the final tournament, etc).
I don't want it to be repeatedly recurring feature to the show but as long as they subtly apply it I wouldn't mind it one bit ^_^.
Though of course Ash will be oblivious to it as always and that's just fine too because he'll probably always be like that no matter what lol.
