There is no stick shift, or even a transmission for that matter. The M12 is a hybrid electric vehicle. The hydrogen internal combustion engine drives a generator which produces electrical power for the four electric drive motors; one for each wheel.
In Halo 2, someone at Bungie kinda lost their marbles and decided that the Warthog's revving sound effect should have "gears" instead of a continuous RPM increase as with the first game (which was correct, considering that the Warthog's drive system requires no gear shifts whatsoever).
