This needs to be accompanied with Mario telling a Veteran's story about the final battle with Bowser. The one that finally finished the Koopa King...but lost him his legs.

Many people don't know this, but Mario is a Vietnam veteran. While it's unknown if he ever participated in infantry operations, he is known for flying Helicopters and dropping ordnance on targets. Canonically, he endured Vietnam without suffering any injuries, but this tells a tale that (at least, in respect to his Vietnam days) he wasn't so lucky.
