Way too damned young. And, as Roderick Shuchart points out at the very beginning of the novel, only idiots carry guns into the Zone.

The game designers went pretty far away from the original Strugatsky Brothers novel.

They did stray from the book because they didn't make a game especially for Roadside Picnic. They were simply inspired by the concept and settings. Another inspiration the team used were the people that went into the cordoned area for precious loot, giving birth to the idea of something desirable from the Zone. This evolved into artifacts.
STALKER was never meant to be a direct game of Roadside Picnic.

Actually the ZONE hates guns, thats why most experienced Stalkers dont use them or even just convive with the zone like pacific pepole, you need know best the game and yes is very diferent that the Clasical concept
