I think the basic theme is 'mascots'

Roshi has turtle.

Yamcha has Puar.

Piccolo is Super dad (seriously, he did a better job raising Gohan than Chichi and Goku did!)

And Tien has Chaozu.

Goku's wondering who his 'cute little mascot' could be, and then he looks at Vegeta, who doesn't like the look in 'the third class fool's' eyes.
