Granheke: According to the artist, they are Red and Green. The reason why he picked the anime version starter Pokemon (Charizard and Blastoise) with video game version companion ones (Pikachu and Eevee) is beyond me.

Or maybe it's just all game and it's generally assumed a majority of people started with Charmander, thus Blue's Blastoise. Or it could have been any starter. There's no "canon" to a player's own game experience. And then in Yellow, you have a Pikachu while Blue/Gary has an Eevee. So really, nothing is "inaccurate."

It would makes sense they are "red" and "Green" those being the original games in Japan. Later in America and im sure other areas got Red and Blue. Having Red(Ash as hes known by his anime name) and Blue(Gary being the same as Ash) giving those pokemon would fit. I think later on Green became the girl(how accurate that is im not sure? once genders for trainers were brought in) The Pikachu/eevee thing was more of Yellow. I think that was more from the anime kinda thing? Being Ash got a pikachu and giving gary an eevee I guess let him pick something that might help him? He did get a evo of eevee in the anime eventually too. Hope this helps?

My theory?
In English, they're known as Red and Blue. It's only fitting that Red has the red Pokémon, Charizard, and Blue has the blue one, Blastoise.
In Pokémon Yellow, Red got the Pikachu and Blue got the Eevee, just like in this pic.
Also, the fact that Red can own Blue in the fight despite being severely type-disadvantaged proves just how badass Red truly is.
