Yup! Fang was originally a guy and Lightning's personality was more brazen and flirtatious. She was supposed to constantly hit on male Fang. Lightning wasn't even the original main character, either -- it was Fang. Everyone just loved the first CGI trailer so much and latched onto the idea of her being the center, that Square Enix changed everything to fit that assumption, thinking it was a smart move at the time. Big mistake that was, huh? Seeing as how it pretty much shaped the entire title into what would later be hated by most of the people who played it. :B
