Yeah, this is cute and all, and objectively, Snape is a miserable sod with a shitty life who deserves some measure of pity.

Still doesn't excuse his absolute douchebaggery, arseholery and general atrocious behavior towards people, and a certain kid in particular, though, which is why I can't bring myself to like his character in any meaningful way.

Good thing he died. Bastard deserved it.

ehm.....didnt you watch the movie?
Didnt you see who he died for?

For what he stood?
Who he wanted to protect?
Your brain must be damaged or something, seriously, watch the movie until you get it.

Anon1,

Its very easy to blindly hate on a character that doesn't behave in a way that you like or agree with.

Snape is very complex, and if you don't take the time to properly analyze and understand and look past 'face value', then all you'll ever see is the 'douchebag' and 'asshole'.

You won't see the boy that fell in love with Lily Potter, that was relentlessly tormented and teased, and almost killed by those tormentors.

The boy that lost Lily forever because of a few harsh words said in anger and humiliation.

The boy that had an awful life at home, a father that despised him, and no true friends.

The man that devoted his entire life to protecting her and keeping her safe, and keeping her son safe.

The man that gave said life to keep that promise–

THAT is Severus Snape.

Shit, I'm'a cry now.
That part of the book and movie made me feel like I went through a train wreck, especially in the movie the way Snape looked at Harry before dying.
Oh my fuck. Oh my fuck.

Like what Amarise said, Snape is INDEED very complex. A lot of characters come off as real bastards and bitches sometimes, but when you think about real people, they're always jerks for a reason. You can't hate people without hating yourself.

Snape was an asshole towards Harry for no good reason at all. He was completely OK with Harry and James dying, if only Voldemort could get him Lily on a silver platter. And than JKR pulled this whole charade in the 6th and 7th books out of her mangy ass.

I get that Snape is a complex character who you all decided was redeemed because he fell in love with a girl and felt so guilty about arranging her death that he dedicated the rest of his life to fighting the man who killed her, and he is certainly a more likable character in the movies, but you all realize he was an abusive, racist, vindictive, murdering asshole right?
He was already using one of the wizarding world's most offensive slurs and planning on joining up with the equivalent of wizard Hitler when he was in school. Even before he pushed Lily away as a friend because she possessed morals he told her an assault on one of her friends was funny and she was taking it too seriously. Then he was perfectly happy to voluntarily get some infant and their family killed until he figured out Voldemort thought it was Lily, at which point he was still happy with it as long as Voldemort didn't kill his childhood friend, just her husband and infant son both of whom he hated. He then proceeded to abuse his students, Nevile's boggart took his damn shape, this is the kid who was abused at home, thrown out of a freaking window by an uncle, but his greatest fear was Snape. He encouraged bullying in his class and as a grown adult bullied the children he was teaching. He tried to get a man he knew was innocent executed over an old schoolboy rivalry, and exposed another as a werewolf over the same, ensuring he wouldn't be able to work and would be treated and thought of as dangerous and less than human by most of the wizarding public. Yes he was overall working with the good guys, and was a character built in greys to show that not everything is black and white, but he wasn't a good guy himself.
