The Soryu was the second of four Japanese carriers sunk at Midway. With all of its AA guns and fighter aircraft focused on defending low-level attacks by U.S. TBD Devastator torpedo bombers, it was left completely vulnerable to the later-arriving American SBD Dauntless dive bombers. It was hit by four bombs, one of which struck right in the middle of the rising sun insignia painted on the flight deck, exploded and sank.

Trivia: In the original version of Neon Genesis Evangelion, all characters had surnames named after Japanese naval vessels of World War II. This was mucked up a bit when they started changing names around (like Asuka's) for the new movies.
