Easy mistake to make. GRU Spetsnaz were known to disguise themselves as VDV. Alpha Group, the FSB's counterterrorist unit, also wear uniforms similar to the VDV on visible operations.

Well to be fair, there does currently exist one (acknowledged) VDV Spetsnaz unit. Though it was formed after she would have served.
I don't recall that the exact designation of her unit was ever stated and it's not like the setting is suppose to be just like the real world. So it's not impossible that they were VDV Spetsnaz.
