Sometimes mods just don't like the way a conversation is going and so wipe the slate clean, as simple as that.

Indeed. Generally, so as not to come off as taking a particular side, we remove all of the comments when an argument has reached a point beyond what is acceptable.

Additionally, if there is a bad comment that is referenced by the other comments, we usually delete all of the comments that reference that comment as well, unless there is a particularly good reason not to.
