And Sif is also trying to protect YOU. Sif knows that the ring holds no guarantee of working to hold the abyss back, so she is trying to save you from the darkness, feeling that death is better then the corruption her master faced.

i completely agree the one and only thing that i hate about dark souls is that you have to kill sif it would have been so much better or at least less heart braking if you got to keep the ring after you beat the game the first time.
