It moves in 3D, but its weapons are set up to fight in 2D. How is a ship that's three-quarters undefended supposed to be intimidating, especially if it has to invert to attack ground targets?

I don't think it can even invert itself.

When the authors first made these, they imagined that space battles are essentially sea battles that are fought on a 2d plane.
They took an artistic license to SciFi

Think outside the box, maybe the ship can create its own gravity field, or maybe the shells it fires are smart rounds that will change course in mid flight? It's Sci-fi, anything is possible!
