She is trapped in a clam. The clam exausted the oxygen from the water within it. It creates an underwater vaccum, thus she is drowning.

Yes she is trapped in a calm that exausted the oxy from the water trapping her inside but the only problem is that she had bubbles coming out of her mouth witch should have been water that she had breathed before the oxygen was used up but its an artist concept of what can happen if a mermaid drowns. Just like suffocation if the air we breath becomes depleted of oxygen we can drown in air.

Good theory, but anon who said costume was serious. There's an episode where Misty comes out of clam in mermaid costume. If the thing malfunctioned and clam didn't come out of water and wouldn't open, well... it was nice knowing you, Misty.

Or it just ran out of air. If the thing doesn't open, it's only a matter of time! Somewhere, tech support is like "if you turn it off, then back on again?" while poor Misty's time counts down.
