Having extolled the philosophy "Never live to experience shame as a prisoner" - that is, to prefer death to being taken captive - to his men, Toujou shot himself with a pistol after the war. However, perhaps because he was left-handed, he missed his vital areas.
When asked to approve plans for the Battle of Imphal while bathing, Toujou is said to have raised issues about things like supply lines and inferior air force without even having bothered to look at any of the reports offered to him.
Opinion of Toujou fell drastically for a while after his failed suicide attempt, but he resolutely sought to shoulder all of the blame for the failed war in the Tokyo trials. He was even smacked on the head once during the trial by Ookawa Shuumei, who sat behind him.
Possessed of a very methodical personality, he was known as the "Memo Demon" for writing down everything his subordinates reported to him or whatever stuck his fancy in a notepad.
During the War in the Pacific, Toujou is said to have rummaged through average people's garbage to see whether the citizens were truly getting their proper rations.
