By different genres, I meant besides ecchi. Senran Kagura was more action orientated and To Love Ru was more romance orientated. But why everyone is starting a war over it is beyond me.

The appeal of ecchi over hentai lies in the fact that you get a story and some characterization. It's common to be more attracted to characters with a personality and backstory, rather than a one shot character who exists only to be fucked. Aside from the fact that most sex scenes in hentai are awkward at best, the seduction and teasing part are often more arousing than straight up porn (chase is better than the catch and so on). The fact that the artist has a very appealing style is also a huge factor.
