It's not impossible to have an anime with a vague story, anon, just like it's not impossible to have a game series with a vague story. It's not the medium that makes it vague, it's how the medium is used to portray the characters and events. ZUN dislikes anime because (ironically, considering the premise) he finds it difficult and frustrating to keep track of so many things flashing by at once.
