I think the author made them that way because honestly, there are chicks who act JUST like these two. Why do you think abuse cases are so rampant? Or that stockholm syndrom is so prevelent in today's society? These type of chicks and frankly anyone in general can be so blindly in love (even from a scientific standpoint, being in love does in fact make you blind to see the faults of another and that period of blindess can last 6 months - 3 years) that they don't see how horribly mistreated they are. This is also why plenty of people dislike others who are in real life being abused and refuse to leave their gf/bf or spouse. It just doesn't make sense to an outsider. These girls are a great example of that, actually with just as obsessive personalities as someone who fell hard into love/lust.

Sasuke is in love with power and revenge, nothing more. just look at his expression here while sakura and Karin are fawning over him. but their "love" is based on looks and and machismo, in other words, it's empty. I doubt anyone would be surprised if either one of them winds up dead or seriously injured by his hands like sakura almost ended up a while back. The whole sakura/naruto/sasuke love triangle reeks of painful irony. But at least naruto has hinata now, at least she genuinely cares for him unlike sakura, who only put him down, toyed with his feelings for her and simply used him to get to sasuke, and we all how WELL that turned out for her.
