This is from the NEW Pokemon series. The story is told with things going exactly how Satoshi Tajiri wanted it to go. Red gets Charmander, and we get the story Satoshi Tajiri wanted to tell us! Not the anime we currently have playing now.
According to the current anime, Ash did not obtain his Charmander until after the first and second gym badges were obtained. He got his though for his kindness and luck.
I'm looking forward to this new anime coming up.
