Yup, the new one is from an item that can only be obtained in the x version. Likewise the old one is from an item only obtainable in Y. You can still transfer these items to either version though.

I don't hate the design, I just find it really weird that Y appears very similar but still different, while X appears to be a polar opposite.
Also, yeah, shiny Charizard is black, so that's a tad confusing.

The only inherent weaknesses with mega evolutions are that they gain new types which could really help them or just make them worse. The other weakness is that they can't hold other items besides the ones that make them mega evolve. Other than that, they really are just superior versions of their previous form thanks to the stat boosts and arguably better abilities.

Mega Y has same weakness as regular, has higher Sp.Atk. Mega X loses its flying type to become a dragon and has higher Atk. It also gains a new ability that increases Atk even more.
