I don't get why anon1 was thumb down, it's true that greninja could be affiliate with Naruto (You know: summoning ninjas frog who can spit water), or with Jiraiya and Minato.

I always saw it more as a Strider/Shinobi reference. Strider for the scarf-tongue and color scheme, Shinobi for Water Shuriken as a signature move and also scarftongue.

Frogs were always associated with ninja actually. Naruto merely took tropes regarding ninja and tried to centralize it. There's a lot of common ninpo techniques you'll see elsewhere in Japanese videogames.
