Actually, the original, while complex, was generally more comprehensible. It had an overarching idea and most details worked on creating the distinctive feeling of personal drama. The Rebuild on the other hand is confusing as fuck, on top of being considerably less emotionally loaded.

In my opinion the problem was that rather than going along with the 2.22 ending where Kaworu/Mark.06 stop 3rd impact before it kills everyone, they said "nah! Jk! Every1 got fucked over after all!" And we start 3.0 with LITERALLY NOTHING at stake except a handful of bitter characters whose stories had already ended and an empty world.
4th impact, 5th impact, 6th impact, who gives a fuck now? There's nothing left to fight for.

Vote me down all you like. This was a terrible fucking movie! Shinji isn't being a whiney bitch for oncr and what does evergone do? Ignore him, yell at him insult him. He literally has NO CLUE that his piloting Eva will cause another impact and end the world...again.
Movie could have been avoided if one person spent 30secs to explain to shining that when he pilots eva the world ends. Terrible plot, terrible character developmeny, just bad!

^Agreed. 2.0 was so amazing! New grounds for a new and better plot to expand the Evaverse and its characters, and they wasted it all!
Now that the hype is over, maybe we can begin to see 3.0 the way the world see Star Wars: The Phantom Menace; a soulless poorly planned waste.
