There was an excuse for the Beam Saber:
-MS's, for whom the sabers [and heat rods] were designed for, are averaging at 18 meters in height compared to humans averaging between 175 to 180 centimeters.
-MSG came out early in 1979, but we can surmise it took at least a couple months to make each episode, which could push back the date of the inception of the Beam Saber to a year or more, considering it first appeared in the first episode.
-Despite Star Wars being a global hit, it was moslty so in the US, thusly the already not_new idea of a laser sword hadn't completely become the titular 'property' of the Star Wars IP that it could be identified as today.

Now considering the above, it's a little harder to believe that they weren't inspired by SW when human-sized energy swords started appearing in 1981 in Space Runaway Ideon.

Essentially, it's just harder to defdend this sword from the SW fans who would label it a ripoff, whereas it wasn't last time.

Actually, the beam saber/energy sword comes from Asimov's Lucky Starr novels, published back in the 1950s, and even without that knowledge, the idea of a flaming sword is as old as myth.
