Xellos literally eats negative emotions, including his own pain, and is therefore sadomasochist. Filia has a hair trigger temper and a predilection for violent outbursts. Their chemistry is like what happens when you mix sodium and chlorine--but that chemistry still results in salt.
Note the bite and scratch marks all over their bodies.
