The terrible thing is that they can't communicate at all. At least not verbally. So they're going to have to come to an understanding about how this is going to work, and they're going to have to do that VERY fast unless they want to end up in a tug of war that will probably get both of them killed.

If they're friends, their chances of survival are much higher. Trust plays an important part in getting out of this peril alive.
