commentary:

> Ganbari-no-Irimichi -- a ghost that appears in "Rengoku Kaidan Monogatari Monshocho" written by Jippensha Ikku, a writer in the late Edo period (1603-1868).
> In the country of Yamato (present-day Nara Prefecture), there was a man named Somegi who was obsessed with a strong lust for sex.
> He often raped and killed women, and his family, unable to bear the sight of him, had him shaved and sent him to live in a hermitage in the mountains.
> He was nicknamed "Ganbari-irudo" (the "eye-watcher") because of the way he kept his eyes peeled for women on the road.
> Eventually, the man could no longer endure his celibacy, so he kidnapped a village girl, imprisoned her in his hermitage, and raped her every day.
> One day, a bandit broke into the hermitage while the man was away.
> When the thief found the captive girl, he felt sorry for her and took her outside.
> When the man returned, he grabbed her, but the bandit killed him with a single sword and returned the daughter to her parents.
> After that, the spirit of a man in a white kimono began to appear at the daughter's house every night.
> When the daughter went into hiding, the man wandered around the houses in the village like a madman, searching for her whereabouts.
> The villagers were so frightened that they asked a monk to subdue the spirit, but to no avail.
