Naga jolokia, the hottest pepper in the world unless I'm mistaken. But even that aside, there are many peppers that are hotter then the habanero.

... Is Jolokia-tan surrounded by the ghosts of those who have died trying to eat her? Because that would be awesome.

habanero is about as hot as the human body can stand there are TONS of peppers and spices that are hotter, but when they got much hotter than habaneros then they can start to do damage to the human body. Peppers are hot because they are actually releasing acid into your body hence "burning" so the more intense the heat the more or stronger acid.

Because if eaten it can cause death if you're not careful. It can cause extreme swelling of the tongue and throat that would cause the airways to seal shut. Many times small villages will cut them open and hang them on fences surrounding their towns to ward away predators and larger animals, rhinos/hippos/elephants.

Actually Anon5 capsicin is an iritant, and to my knowledge is not particularly acidic or basic. I doubt it has any corrosive properties.
Also, only mammals are affected by it.

Oh sorry it's capsaicin, not capsicin.
And yeah as I said if you look at the chemical structure it's clearly not going to lose those hydrogen atoms or react with too many chemicals aside from oxygen.
Lrn2chemistry, it's fun.
