Jokes on you. you can break wooden chests(Metal ones aren't mimics) and it will net you only rubbish instead of what was once inside.

Wooden chests only break if you hit them repeatedly. And there ARE metal chest mimics now.
Also, hitting them up close doesn't help anymore. They grab you almost instantly if you strike.
