Not all suppressor's are meant to make the gun more quiet. They can also distort sound so that it makes it harder to tell where exactly the sound came from.

Is being very important to keep joints from becoming lodged with ice. Must keep joints clear, or will not function well.

Also to answer anon 1's question, probably to reduce the noise for the guys on his side. Not everyone gets a giant robot and it must be hell for foot solderis to be near friendly artillery when its firing. Gotta remember the friendlies are gonna be closer to the cannon when its firing than the enemy so they need all the help they can get to reduce the noise pollution when close by to the firing.
