The Super Metroid comic also, as a running gag, has Samus retreating into her morphball when she gets uncomfortable.

Comics aren't canon, and it shouldn't work for SmashBros(also not canon) where the morph ball is downplayed, but hey, Trolling Samus.

The timeline goes:
Metroid(NES)/Metroid Zero Mission(same story just retold with more detail.
Metroid Prime/Metroid Pinball(same story just stylized retelling)
Metroid Prime 2 Echos
Metroid Prime 3 Corruption
Metroid II Return of Samus
Super Metroid
Metroid Other M
Metroid Fusion
