One thing that the Japanese will always have the one-up on Western developers: Compelling character design.

Far Cry, L4D, Last of Us, Serious Sam, etc- all great games, but each and every one of them have such samey, everyman protagonists that they just all kinda blur into the same 'John Doe'.
