A Twitter-originated fad. It started from a user named Myako's tweet (here: twitter.com/myakkomyako/status/540485949822468096). The term "turtleneck" started to trend just because of this single post displaying an open-chest white turtleneck sweater.

Artists eventually began throwing around the challenge to draw their waifu or husbando in the sweater."
