It's part of etiquette. You're either supposed to put used chopsticks on a chopstick rest or on your bowl and the spoon is supposed to remain in the bowl since it would make an unnecessary mess on the open table. Anyway, it would be fairly easy to hold them in place with your thumbs, like the animation shows.
