The main problem people had with the end pairings is that the 'red herring' relationship (NaruSaku) had much more (and believable) development, than what ended up becoming canon(NaruHina).

The only real thing he spoke about NaruSaku ship is that it would be wrong to Sakura's character since for the whole entire manga she was in love with Sasuke. Also she knew Hinata had the hots for Naruto. She was the most down to earth character in the manga.

Shikamaru was the most down-to-earth character. He was lazy and apathetic but came through when he needed to because he understood if he didn't do his job someone else would and they would do it worse.

Sakura, on the other hand, had a shallow crush on a bad boy who thought she was annoying, didn't care about her, and tried to kill her. Sakura and Sasuke had ZERO chemistry.

I felt bad for Junko (the voice actor of Naruto) since she preferred NaruSaku over NaruHina. Although, the most popular ships in Japan are NaruSasu and NaruSaku, so it's not completely surprising.
