Yeah, just a cameo. Doubt Gainax would kill off their characters in a completely unrelated show. (There's a 99.9999999% chance they died when Gurren Lagann cuts the bathhouse gunman in half.)

It is indeed supposed to be the characters, but its just a humerous cameo and isnt really connected with any of the other series'.
