As it turns out, the way is blocked for me in hard mode but not in easy mode. Hard mode probably requires you to do more stuff before you're allowed in?

@Captain Obvious It's an oversight by the maker I believe, as literally nothing will unlock that area on hard mode. Either way, using easy mode lets you get in that area, which then unlocks the boss in the boss run area.

It's probabaly both. That same wikipedia article you posted indicates pretty clearly that it's probably urinary fluid mixed with stuff from the para urethral tissue, but more importantly it talks about how the whole subject is mired with ambiguity and methodology problems.
