Yes, they failed.

There were several wars between christianity and islam at the time, and a lot of mainland Europe was conquered by christians. However these succesful wars were NOT crusades.
Also, Istanbul is situated in mainland Europe.
If this expulsion is the desired outcome, then yes, they failed.
