Understandable, however, the Koopalings being Bowser's children have been watered down since Super Mario World in Japan while in America kept that notion alive with the cartoons and a small number Mario spinoffs.
More importantly, Miyamoto has ALWAYS value gameplay over character development and story; he has claimed and explained this multiple times in some of his past interviews whenever it was brought up.
I'm guessing ever since the introduction of Bowser Jr, Miyamoto played it cool with all these questions about birth mother, the Koopalings themselves, where did they come from in the history of the Mario timeline, etc, and just rolled with it until he decided to just dunk the whole "Bowser has 8 kids" to just 1.
tl;dr
Miyamoto doesn't want to waist time developing character and rewriting history within the Super Mario timeline to explain why, how, and when did Bowser get 8 kids from nowhere.
