There is a mistake on the blackboard. The result isn't 9. It's actually supposed to be 42.
Seriously though I question if all the math is real math. Looks a bit like a whole lot of formulas equations with no connection to each other.
Also it contains a smiley :)

It does say 42. It's a base 42 system. They used Arabic numeric symbols for 0-9, English alphabetic symbols for 10-32 (Excluding I,O, and S since they can be mistaken for 1, 0 and 5, respectively, when hand written.) and circled Arabic numerals for 33-42. Which means circled 9 = 42.
