A lot of people say that, which I always found baffling: DC has a lot more "street detective/martial artist" types, while many of marvel's characters were made specifically made to be more powerful than DC characters.
Plus, Marvel has more psychics/magic users/gods running around.

It really depends on which characters you're talking about. These days, Thor and superman are about on par with each other, Hulk still has theoretically infinite strength (though presently dead, but we all know he'll be back eventually), Flash can still solo most of the DC and marvel universes combined, batman is still a mary sue, etc, etc, etc. It's honestly less that DC characters are actually more powerful overall, and more that they have more rabid fanboys willing to sing their praises.
