Notice how every Pokemon in the commercial was Gen 1. Pokemon Company very clearly knows that this is chasing after people with a passive interest more than anything else (presuming the watch is optional), and its best to stick to whatever little they may have remembered from 17 years ago.

Also, this is why Mewtwo Strikes Back happened. Every damn reason it happened ;)
