Gohan transforms into SSJ2 and becomes the most powerful known DBZ character.
Years later, he has stopped training and Goku has to save the day.
Gohan attains a form that can kick Super Buu's ass.
Years later, he has stopped training and Goku has to save the day.
... this wont be any different.

I hate to agree with you because Gohan is my favorite character. But after seeing his performance against Frieza in the movie that analysis rings true.
You do not hype someone up the way they did with Gohan and then let him get jobbed at every occasion.

Wrong. That was only a rumor spread by those who wanted Gohan to be the main character, and got pissed when it didn't happen.
AT said that at one point he had considered making Gohan the MC during the Buu saga, but realized it wouldn't work because Gohan had already ben established as someone who didn't LIKE to train and fight. He does when there's a new threat in the horizon, but if there's not he simply doesn't care.
Ever since after the Pilaf Saga, Dragonball had always been a story about a boy/guy who wanted to become strong, suprass his limits and find new challenges because that's what HE truly wanted. Not necesarily because there was someone threatening to kill his friends. That was his personal goal, and thus the entire series revolved around adventure and self-superation.
Gohan doesn't fit that role. He never did. He was born with extremely potential, but if there's something the story made quite clear, was thatif there's ONE thing hybrid Saiyans don't inherit from their full-blooded Saiyan parent, is the inborn DESIRE to fight and train. Their bodies are Saiyan, but their minds are Human.
Gohan would've never worked as the main character.

It's hard to say anything for certain about DB's development because Toriyama has always had backseat drivers telling him what to do and mucking up the story at every turn.
If he had ben allowed to make the story entirely by himself it would've been very different.

Actually it would have ended after the Frieza saga as he's stated many times before THAT is were he wanted to originally stop. So Cell and Buu wouldn't exist. Nor would Gohan becoming an official badass.
