I've seen a scene with Goemon Ishikawa cutting through a bullet like this and the best comment was "an idiot found with two bullet wounds".

Those are called Shirasaya (白鞘) from Shiro = White or Pure and Saya = Scabbard, those were used when the Katana wasn't be used for some time and/or needed to be stored, the shirasaya usually is made nurizaya wood.

When the Meiji period started and the use of katanas was forbidden, the samurais or yakuzas always used the shirasaya because it looked like a bakuto (Wood Sword for practice) so was easy to conceal.
