The thing is this can actually happen, gender be damned, as long as you have the spirit of water and a digimon compatible with it. (any will do but aquatic types cross-over better).

And I thought pokemon had weird evolutions.

You don't even need the spirit of water, in the card game ranamon evolves naturally from syakomon.

Yeah, but for Gomamon specifically to reach Ranamon, the Human Spirit of Water is needed to be used on Ikkakumon. For the most direct route, at least.

Otherwise Gomamon has to go up into Ikkakumon, down into Shakumon, then up into Ranamon.
