Actually if you look in their doodles, cap'n cuttlefish gave the two of them a baby to take care of (not sure on age, but the doodles state the two of them are 16 when the octoling feels love for the inkling) and while they are sleeping the child starts nibbling the octoling's tentacles, then starts doing it while awake, until they finally cut off the end of one and give it to her.. she nibbles and eats it, and starts developing octoling traits (eye marks, suckers on top of tentacles, rear tentacles curling upward, green eyes)
