Mello and Near are L's heirs, set to inherit his name and work. Hence, L, M, N. It's not that difficult to remember.

In the extra chapter, Near claimed that he only ever spoke to L once, but most people think that's bullshit, especially because of the way the two of them viewed L, as well as where they grew up and such.
