Well, honestly, had they butchered the designs of the characters and kept everything else intact (like they did with Maoyuu, which was epic btw), I probably wouldn't had complained.
However, they pretty much removed all the BERSERK!-tier level of amazingly bloody combat (Rory killing the American Spec-Ops in the Ryokan, Kuribayashi curbstomping Prince Zorzal...), all the darker and edgier parts (which made the whole series feel very mature in the manga, despite all the fanservice and monster girls) and turned the whole thing into what many have described as ''Yet another shitty harem anime, but with now SDF recruitment ads''.
The only good thing about it was Risa Taneda's epic voicework on Rory.

Although I've never read the manga, I kinda agree with that last part of the previous Anon's comment. The way the JSDF is portrayed, always acting so unfailingly good and righteous, it did have the feel of a recruitment ad. Although that's probably true of just about any other TV show out there involving the military nowadays. Still, I like harem so I enjoyed it, warts and all. Too many cute girls and I'm a sucker for elf chicks :)
