Let's make a 'Color dodge brush'.
Recently,
Someone asks about these kind of light effect or highlighting, so I'm gonna tell you how to make some brushes.
Actually, nothing special.
This tutorial is based on Painter 6.1, but maybe doesn't matter if higher version.
The brush below is a default one of Painter, 'Dodge brush'.(in case of 6.1 ver, it's at 'Photo brush' menu.)
But, Dodge is black-and-white, so it's like 'eraser', make things white-ly brighter.
If you want to add colors, while using 'glow up' effect like Dodge, choose 'Fire brush' in 'F/X brush tool', not Dodge.
However, Fire brush has a shape of fire, so usage is very limited.
To use it more freely, first, you need to create a new brush, so click 'New Brush' in the 'Brush' menu.
Appearance of Fire brush (Dab type)
Then it'll create a new brush that looks like Fire. Look at the 'Brush Controls', and 'General' section. Change 'Dab Type' from 'Captured' to 'Circular'. Also, adjust the value of 'Jitter' in 'Random' section to zero. Easy, right? :)
And here is your 'Colored Dodge Brush'.
Use any colors freely~
Bright and Cool~
This brush has 'Glow up' property, so it makes dark things brighter. Thus, the density of brush goes denser if you pick white-er color. Here's a tip:
Wanna focus to 'Coloring'? Then pick one of 'High Chroma colors' which lies here.
Wanna focus 'Brighter'? Then pick one of 'Low Chroma colors' which lies here.
Lastly, I think that if you want to use Colored Dodge effectively, choose more black-ish color and rub many time, instead of white-ish color and less rubbing. And, if you use it in a whole picture or overuse after finishing a picture, Digital effect may grow stronger and will spoil the picture. In my case, I use this for special effect of particular area, or simple express of brightness and light source when doing first coloring. Especially, not the finishing, but at starting, to depict various colors, use it to 'break' colors. At the ending, go with other brush and make your touches alive. I think it's better. Good luck to your pic~
