The Imperial Guard is and has always been the true badasses of 40k. Ordinary humans standing up to the greatest horrors of the grimdark and fighting on no matter the odds. Also, tanks.

Considering that the reason they are considered wimps is that they are compared to the likes of genetically-engineered superhuman space marines, or genetically-engineered superhuman space marines with the power of chaos, or ancient elite warriors of an space elf race with decades of training and experience, or even the big, bloodthirsty orks...

Imperial Guardsmen are fucking badasses the entire bunch of them, if you go by regular human standards, that is. Also, do you realize how big balls are required to actually TRY to fight an ork in hand to hand combat?
